March 21, 2006, JAMESON, MISSOURI -- Officials told KMBC a family was keeping another a relative's rottweiler in the garage when the attack happened.

Quillan Cottrell apparently wandered into the garage where the dog was chained up.

"The little boy either went to the dog or he got in the chain-length of the dog and didn't realize it," Daviess County Sheriff Kevin Heldenbrand said.

At about 11:30 a.m., the boy's mother found the child mauled to death outside the garage.

"One of the other little girls came in and said that she couldn't find her brother and she thought he was just playing hide and seek or something. The mom looked outside and did what she could," Heldenbrand said.

He said the dog stripped the clothes off the boy and that the toddler suffered numerous bite wounds to his neck and head.

The dog belonged to a relative who had been visiting when the attack happened. A Daviess County sheriff's deputy shot the dog.

KMBC reported that the boy weighed 30 pounds; the rottweiler weighed 140 pounds.

The attack is under investigation.
